“The Society Lectures are an absolute joy. The hour just whizzes by.”
There is only one thing more stimulating than enjoyment of the arts and that is enjoying the arts with like-minded people. Our dynamic programme of lectures and the occasional visit and study day is made even more interesting by the presence of people who share the same interests as you. Southampton Decorative and Fine Arts Society is part of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies, an organisation of over 90,000 members recognised as a significant force within the art world. What brings us together is an interest in the arts and conservation and what keeps us coming back to the society is the high standard of our activities. NADFAS is for people of all ages and new members are always welcome – it is a great way to make new friends. NADFAS lecturers are distinguished people with expertise in their chosen topics. Some work at universities, some write books about the arts, some guide tours in national art galleries, some lead tours abroad or lecture on cruises, some are radio and television contributors and some deal in art. Some are all these things! To ensure their availability we have to book up to two years in advance.
Our society began in 2002 when Pamela Kimber and Elizabeth Dennis decided it would be good to have a local NADFAS branch that met in the evenings and worked to find a venue and recruit members in co-operation with the University Staff Club. The first lecture took place in October 2002 and the topic was “Turner and Trafalgar”. Since then, the society has gone from strength to strength.
